Doctorate of Philosophy


The primary aim of the program is to impart skills that enable scholars to undertake independent research. The student needs to take a minimum of four courses. The student will engage in rigorous research work in an area of his/her own interest. Research activities will be guided by a faculty member who is chosen by the student with mutual consent. The progress of the research work is periodically monitored by a Doctoral Committee (DC) constituted the department. This programme is not time bound and its duration is approximately 4 to 5 years. Scholars under full-time residence will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 25000 for the first 2 years and Rs. 28000 for the next 3 years. Students who receive stipend are expected to assist faculty members in teaching and laboratory for 8 hrs per week. A successful candidate after finishing PhD has several career prospects such as postdoctoral research, academia, research labs and industry.

Eligibility criteria:

There are four broad categories of intake in Ph.D program:

Regular Ph.D program

a) Candidates with M.E/M.Tech or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record
b) Candidates with Master’s degree in Sciences with a good academic record and of exceptional merit with eligibility for the relevant Engineering discipline and with a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR NET/NBHM/INSPIRE or equivalent qualification.
c) Candidates who are in their (i) 3rd semester of MTech/ME or (ii) 9th semester of BTech – MTech dual degree, with a good academic record can also apply in September/October for admission in July of the following year.

Direct Ph.D program

a) Candidates with B.E./B.Tech. from Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 and above on a 10.0 point scale or with a valid GATE score.
b) B.E./B.Tech. with 8 CGPA or equivalent from any other University and having a valid GATE score.
c) B.E./B.Tech. from a reputed R & D organization and having a proven research record
d) Candidates in their 7th semester of B.E./B.Tech in a recognized Institute/University with good academic record can apply for Direct admission to Ph.D. programme in various Engineering and Science departments can also apply in September/October for admission in July of the following year.

External/part time Ph.D

a) Candidates with M.E/M.Tech or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record. The candidate should have minimum of two years experience.
b) Candidates with Master’s degree in Sciences with a good academic record and of exceptional merit with eligibility for the relevant Engineering discipline and with a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR NET/NBHM/INSPIRE or equivalent qualification. The candidate should have minimum of two years experience.

Interdisciplinary Ph.D
