Master of Science
The M.S. by research programme at IIT-M has more emphasis on thesis/dissertation and less emphasis on course work as compared to the M.Tech programme. The number of courses a MS student must take is a minimum of five. The student chooses a research problem and is mentored by a faculty member. He/She is free to choose any faculty member of his/her choice as guide with mutual consent.The progress of his/her research work is monitored periodically by a General Test Committee (GTC) constituted by the department. This programme is not a time bound and its duration is around 2 – 3 years. Students admitted under full-time residence will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 12400 for a maximum of 3 years. Students who receive stipend are expected to assist faculty members in teaching and laboratory for 8 hrs per week. A successful candidate after finishing MS will usually pursue PhD or take up a job in industry specializing in his/her field.
a) Candidates with a BE/ B.Tech with valid GATE score or a Master’s degree in appropriate Sciences/Management where eligible with a good academic record and a valid GATE score or AIMA or equivalent qualification tenable for the current year in the relevant areas.
b) IIT B.Tech candidates with a CGPA score of 8.0 or above on a scale of 10 [SC/ST: 7.5 CGPA].
c) Candidates applying under external / part-time residence:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree in appropriate Sciences/Management where eligible with a good academic record. However, valid GATE score or CAT/AIMA or equivalent qualification is not required in these cases. The candidate should have minimum of two years experience.
